Our new… tree… thinks that minotaurs are awesome. Interesting. We find some artwork that indicates that this fortress was sacked sometime in the past by a force of minotaurs and demons. Interesting. Further in we hear a voice ranting in an unknown language. Probably Undercommon. Behind another door we hear a voice speaking Supernal, taunting something. Definitely not Angelic as it is threatening to pluck someone’s eyeball out. We go with the ranting voice.
Opening the door we find some minions being ranted at by a bigger dwarf. Stupid dwarves. He makes some threats but we don’t pay too much attention to them. The rogue of course rushes forward and takes the first strike, then sucks up the big dwarve’s counter attack. The dwarf rushes her into the fire and his minions rush forward to block the doorway, separating us from our burning rogue.
With two mighty swings of my sword I push the minions back from the door, opening room for my allies to join me in the room. The rogue rolls out of the fire and springs to her feet, and suddenly our situation looks much better. We form a line and start working through the room, harassed by the thurge casting from the back of the room until the avenger works his way around their line to charge the thurge. The rogue slips free of the (ranting, frothing) boss and slips a dagger into the small of the thurge’s back, ending him.
The rest of the fight is tough and individually we all reach a point where we fear for ourselves. Whenever that point is reached however, the party rallies and comes to the aid of anyone hard pressed by the enemy. By the time the boss is the only one left standing his ranting has fallen silent as fear overpowers his rage. He flees out of the room and is jumped by the druid in animal form. A single ripping tearing bite ends his life.
We search the room and find a +2 flaming maul on the corpse of the boss. The rogue detects a box containing a +2 amulet of health, 491gp and a small onyx demon idol with ruby eyes. (We also gain 308XP)
Fearing the fiends in the room next door we drag our weary selves back to the 2nd tower and barricade ourselves into a store room to rest. Hours later we emerge, rested. The fiends appear to have left so we leave their room unexplored and proceed to explore the rest of the tower. We put some undead to rest in a ruined minotaur temple then continue, finding a second entrance to the room the fiends were in.
The mouthy captives don’t have much to say, other than scornful remarks about how we could have saved them yesterday if only we had explored a little further. I give the mouthiest one a torch and offer to hire him as a torchbearer – an offer he quickly refuses. Ungrateful.
Since the fortress seems to have been thoroughly looted we head back to town, the liberated slaves trailing behind us.
The bridge to the 2nd tower now holds a surprise: two devils being driven towards us by the remaining dwarves. Satisfaction – would have hated to leave this place without completing the sweep. The narrow bridge does cause some trepidation as the drop into the molten lava below is rather long but I figure that will work to our advantage as much as theirs. Taragon opens for us before they can react and Grayson pushes a demon off the bridge. Damn, they fly.
And fire spines out of their bodies. Ow.
The thurge In the back takes advantage of the narrow conditions and firebombs us, while Saidin slams into a dwarf. Slowed I can’t follow him but I stagger forward and hit the same dwarf with a hand axe. The fight from there turns into the usual chaotic swirl of events, with a few standouts. The devils swoop around and fire spines at us before swooping down to try to bull rush us off the walkway. The combined fire of the party drops one of the dwarves, allowing Grayson to slip past and deal with the caster. The rogue is almost sent tumbling off the bridge by a demon who lands right in front of me and manages to save herself, falling prone. With something to attack (finally) I drop the devil with one blow.
Seconds later a dwarf knocks Saidin off the bridge and into the lava.
There is no body to recover.
A few minutes later there is a rush of wind, followed by a crash.
